Helen Pauline Caffey was born December 4, 1906 to Helen Winn Mead of Decatur, Georgia and Lochlin W. Caffey of Lowndes County, Alabama at Camp Keithley, Mindanao, Philippines where her father was serving in the U.S. Army. Caffey received two Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Colorado in 1928, and in 1930 she earned a degree in Bachelor of Arts degree in Library Science from Emory University in Atlanta.
